Photos by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.douglasfriedmanstudio.com\/\">Douglas Friedman.<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Having successfully worked together on a half-dozen Bay Area restaurants, it was only natural that the clients turned to interior designer Jon de la Cruz of <a href=\"https:\/\/dlcid.com\/\">DLC-ID<\/a> for help with their own home. \u201cIt felt very easy for me to jump in,\u201d de la Cruz shares. Photos by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.douglasfriedmanstudio.com\/\">Douglas Friedman.<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Functionality and comfort are the cornerstones of de la Cruz\u2019s work. \u201cAnd then I always want to add something delightful and unexpected.\u201d Witness the living room\u2019s sofas, hand-me-downs from the wife\u2019s family. \u201cThey just needed a bit of freshening up,\u201d he says; he had them reupholstered  in a dinosaur print. \u201cThey feel very traditional but when you look closely, it\u2019s very Jurassic,\u201d he points out. Coupled with the room\u2019s dark lacquered olive walls and a fish and ships print over the fireplace, the effect is at once soothing and surprising. In the dining room, that effect is achieved by balancing a Sputnik chandelier, a painting by a local California artist, an inherited dining set and walls whose color spirals through the spectrum of pinks and milk chocolate as the light changes throughout the day. A vibrant artwork turns the primary bathroom, with its impeccable cabinetry and well-chosen fixtures, from practical to playful. A collection of horse prints becomes a statement when hung together in the foyer. A custom upholstered sofa and a wall mural hand-drawn by de la Cruz and inspired by the interior elevations he\u2019d drawn for one of the husband\u2019s restaurants conjures up an old- fashioned pizza parlor. \u201cIt has to be comfortable, welcoming and has to function.
